Fulton County Schools: The Hidden Impact of Road Proximity and Pollution on Underprivileged Communities

Which School to Choose in Fulton County?

Choosing the right school is crucial in shaping an individual’s development from an early age. One key factor that often goes unnoticed is the school’s location, which can significantly impact a child’s exposure to traffic-generated air and noise pollution. Schools near busy roads may pose health risks to children due to higher levels of pollution. Additionally, proximity to support facilities like libraries and bicycle lanes can influence the quality of education and students’ transportation choices, directly affecting their physical and mental growth.

Motivated by these considerations, I conducted a study of schools in Fulton County, focusing on two major deliverables:

  1. Mapping Vulnerable Schools: Generated shapefiles identifying schools in Fulton County that are vulnerable to traffic-generated air and noise pollution.
  2. Ranking Schools by Quality Index: Developed a School Quality Index, ranking schools based on their proximity to library facilities and bicycle networks.

These findings are presented in the form of two separate maps.

The study was conducted using Python to analyze the data and generate the results.
